Connecticut nurseries to phase out 25 barberry cultivars

Connecticut's nursery and landscape industry will voluntarily start ;phasing out the sale ;and production of 25 Japanese barberry cultivars over the next three years because of their invasive potential (July 1, 2010-June 30, 2013).

Scientists Develop New Potting Medium

A new type of sustainable and environmentally friendly potting medium made from thinned pine trees has been created by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists and their university cooperators.

Did you know ...

The Agriculture / Conservation Committee will be offering the following activities for all Granges to participate in:

1. Donation to Heifer International, with total donations from throughout the year to be presented at the Banquet at the Connecticut State Grange Annual Session.

2. Agriculturally Related Resolutions -- If a Subordinate or Pomona Grange endorses any resolutions related to agriculture they can be submitted to the State Grange for action at the annual session by directing those resolutions to the Director of the Agriculture Committee.

3. Young Farmer Award -- This is an award designed to recognize a farmer less than 40 years of age who stands out as an exemplary young farmer.

4. Outstanding Farmer Award -- will be awarded to a farmer or farm worker of any age who has demonstrated themselves to be particularly outstanding in any field pertaining to agriculture.

5. Outstanding Production Award -- is intended for the individual who deserves to be recognized as being outstanding in the advancement or promotion of agriculture.

6. Outstanding Professional Award -- is available for the professional who
demonstrates an outstanding interest in the promotion or advancement of
agriculture.

Applications will be available for download or you can contact the State Agriculture Director.

Items 3, 4, 5, 6, will have a deadline of October 1.

Adopted by the Agriculture Committee of the Connecticut State Grange on May 21, 2003.
