Around The Grange
Oct News from Simsbury Grange No. 197

By Margaret Smith

  OCTOBER 23, 2023 --

September 6th - monthly grange meeting - Topics discussed: New membership chair, Sue W. with suggestion of having membership information at each event, building maintenance/renovation, sending delegates to the state session, attendance at other grange fairs, community composting, volunteer Halloween opportunities at The American School of the Deaf, potential music programs in the next 6-8 months, thank you note from local family in need.

September 14th - We hosted the fourth of five Beaver Pond Wildlife films by Ray Aselin at 7:00pm at our grange hall. Our local library partnership is going well as evidenced by 40 people in attendance and 3-4 potential new members. Each film highlights what you’ll see at a northeastern beaver pond at that time of year. If you missed it, you can still get in on the fun at our 5th and final film on Thursday, November 9th at 7:00pm. Here’s what we’ll see:

Foliage turns in time-lapses from green to blazing autumn colors. Wildlife is now preparing for winter, beavers building food caches, snow arrives, ponds are capped with ice, but beavers are still actively feeding and maintaining lodges. Muskrats find acorns on the ice, otters roll in the snow. Beavers are heard vocalizing in the lodge, a merlin hunts by the pond, and an otter feeds on fish. The general ecology of beaver pond habitat is discussed, including the eventual change from pond to meadow, and the large range of wildlife that the habitat supports. Join us at 6:00pm for a social hour before the film. Community members are now bringing food to share which will include a Tex-Mex casserole, Beaver Lodge cookies, shrimp, cheese, crackers, grapes and more! Next meeting - Oct 26th at 7:00pm.
