Ekonk Community Junior Grange News for December

By Rebecca Gervais

  DECEMBER 9, 2013 --

We held our Installation mid-September, congratulations to all of our new officers!  22 enjoyed  the apple orchard, almost 500 dwarf trees on less than 2 acres!  He also grows them along wires, espalier style.  Very neat!  We learned a lot about apples! After picking apples to take home, we went back to the Grange and made apple crisp, apple sauce and apple cider!  We ate our bagged lunch while the crisp baked, and decorated the hall for Halloween.  It was a GREAT time!  Did you know it takes about 16 pounds of apples to make one gallon of cider?  That’s a lot of apples!

We joined our subordinate in welcoming the National Representative to Connecticut.  We had a great supper of spaghetti, meatballs, and salad.  Thanks to the hard workers in the kitchen, 44 people were served, not too bad for a weeknight gathering!  We are very happy that my Grandma, sister Marion R. Emmons, represented us at State session, THANK YOU!

Our Halloween party was tons of fun!  Thanks to the youth for the spooky hayride!  Lots of work goes into something like that, too often we forget to be appreciative.  Many Juniors and Honoraries helped to set up our “spooky-scavenger hunt” rooms.  Lots of spiders, bugs, pumpkins, eyeballs and goodies to be found.  It is so much fun to see the kids dressed up and having fun together!

At our November meeting, we had an eyeball catapult contest.  We got to eat the eyeballs after.  Who would have thought eyeballs could be so much fun?!  We also made cards for the Veterans who live in the home in Jewett City.  We also all chipped in and bought cards, checkers/chess, and dominoes, as well as chocolates for their “community room”.  We are so blessed that others will step up to keep us safe.  We should always be thankful for the sacrifices that others make for us.  Too many think of entitlement instead of serving.

Our Christmas play is coming up, rehearsals have started.  It’s going to be Bear-y exciting! We have grizzly bears, brown, black and polar bears, and pandas come too! December 13th, at 6pm is our annual play.  Feel free to join us!  Santa will be joining us, too!

On Black Friday, we will be walking for St. Jude.  Always a good way to walk off the Thanksgiving meal.

Happy Fall!
