Remember “Banner Raids”?

By Edith Schoell, State Historian

JULY/AUGUST 2007 -- Do you remember “Banner Raids”?  Grangers would travel to neighboring Granges to get the banner and bring it back to their Grange.  It was a gimmick introduced in 1972 to create membership interest.

In William Pearl’s Master’s Address, he said “I had expected the program to be of more interest in the Subordinate Granges than in Pomonas.  However, it proved just the opposite.  Some of the Pomonas made monthly raids in an effort to bring home a banner.

The rivalry between Farmington Valley No. 11 and New Haven County Pomona No. 5, was real interesting as they tried to out-maneuver each other during the months.

It is really amazing how one area will participate in this type of fun contest, while others give it little heed.”
