Winchester Grangers remember longtime past Chaplain Mary Thomes

Mary Elizabeth (Jones) Thomes, passed away on January 11, 2013 at Laurel Hill Healthcare surrounded by her family. Mary was born in Palmer, MA on July 1, 1926. She resided in the towns of Palmer, Greenwich, Warren and West Medway, MA., until 1945 when she married her beloved Charles Thomes on October 26th.

On October 27, 1945, Mary & Charlie moved to Winchester Center, CT., and were a part of this loving community for the rest of their lives. Mary worked as a Clerk in many of the Winsted stores. She also worked at the Gilbert Clock Shop & Fairchild's as a Parts Inspector.

Mary was very active in the Winchester Center community serving on many committees in various capacities. She was a 50+ year member of the Winchester Center Congregational Church. Mary sang in the choir, served as a church deacon and in many other capacities over the years. She was a member of the Winchester Center Grange and held many offices during her affiliation there. She was a member of the Winchester Center Fire Department Woman's Auxiliary also. Mary was always ready to help with many community projects. Blueberry and Strawberry Festivals, community Holiday Fairs, Grange Fairs and the many gatherings honoring all occasions of life at the Winchester Center Congregational Church. Mary also volunteered at the local food bank for many years. Mary loved her family, her friends and her community very much.

She loved music and animals domestic & wild. She also loved being outdoors working in her gardens and yard. Daily, Mary would feed her beloved wild birds. Watching them brought her great joy, entertainment and pleasure. The family would often hear her excited stories about the visits of bears, bob cats, deer, mountain lion, fox and the other four-legged animals to her back yard. She loved all wildlife.

Mary leaves us now to reside with God. She joins her beloved husband Charlie, her brother Gordon Jones, sister Ruth Doubleday, parents Mabel & Nelson Jones and many of her life long friends. Mary's family, Anna "Penny" Hewitt of Chicopee, MA, Donna Thomes and partner Rick Gundlach, Cheryl Thomes, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends all pray that the journey Mary now takes is filled with great love and peace. Mom, may you soar with the eagles you so dearly love.

Montano-Shea Funeral Home, Winsted is entrusted with the arrangements. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Winchester Center Cemetery, South Road, Winchester Center at 1 PM. At Mary's request, there will be no calling hours. Mary's family is filled with heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional care she received at Laurel Hill. Mary loved them as much as they loved her. The staff at Laurel Hill is simply the best!
