Around The Grange
Homemade gifts focus of new Community Service / CWA Venture
  MAY 27, 2010 --

Love can be expressed in many ways, but for some, it is through a unique and generous way of showing their affection for nursing home residents, hospital patients, and newborn babies.

Ekonk Community Grange member Barbara Cameron was a spirited woman whose beautiful handiwork produced more than 5,000 lap robes and baby hats, all of which she donated to many local hospitals and nursing homes. Her handiwork won numerous awards and trophies at the Brooklyn Fair and in Grange competitions over the years.

When Barbara passed away this March, her family decided to honor her by creating a project that continues to bring comfort and joy to those she dedicated countless hours for. As a joint venture between the Community Service and Women's Activities committees, Subordinate Granges throughout Connecticut are urged to have their members make lap robes and baby hats, and donate them to local hospitals and nursing homes. The only rule is that the pieces must be handmade and not purchased.

The Subordinate Grange that donates the most lap robes and baby hats before the September 1st deadline will be given a check for $50.00 in memory of Barbara by the Cameron Family. The Grange will be recognized and check presented at the Connecticut State Grange Annual Session in October.

Reports are to be submitted to Women's Activities Director Betty Jane Gardiner by September 1, 2010. Granges can download a report form from the Connecticut State Grange website at http://www.CTStateGrange.org (on the Downloads page), or by contacting either the Community Service or Women's Activities committees.
