Mar News from N. Stonington Community Grange No. 138

March 8: Ritual Program

March 22: Lecturer’s Program State Contest

Our Santa Claus for many years has now joined the Great Grange Above and his beautiful tenor voice has joined their choir. Thurlow Coats was our Master in the ‘70s and during his active years in the Grange he acted in plays, sang solos and in duets, trios and quartets. Borrowing from the words of a young man who had never walked, said at the funeral of his younger brother who had suffered all 13 years of his life from the same disease; “I don’t know why everyone is crying, David is running around in Heaven now!” God speed, Thurlow.

At our January 12 meeting we learned all about the French and Indian War. It surprised us to know that “Yankee Doodle” was originally written for this war with what we know as the “first” verse (where Yankee Doodle rides his pony) written years later. And if the birds will just stop eating those invasive bittersweet berries and spreading the seeds all around the countryside next time we will tell you all about fabulous February.
