Around The Grange
August 2021 News from Killingly Grange No. 112

By Penny Bennett

  August 11, 2021 --

At our Annual Picnic, which was held at the Bennett household on July 12th, our State Steward Ray Harrington and his wife Betty Jane, visited with us and inquired about the colorful history of our hall. It was very nice to be reunited with long-term members , Millie Briggs and Ann Duval, both of whom haven’t been to regular meetings for some time. They have faithfully helped prepare many dinners over the years. Millie is noted for her delicious apple pies, and Ann always made sandwiches for our Bluegrass Concerts.

Glenna Bruno will head up a Cold Deli Smorgasbord on August 14th. This dinner, served from 4:30-6:30 pm., will include deli meats, a potato salad, a macaroni salad, a garden salad, a gelatin salad (an orange, pineapple and carrot medley) and homemade apple crisp. The cost is only $10.00 per dinner. On Saturday, September 25th, Pat Valys’ Roast Pork Dinner will be held from 4:30-6:30pm. The menu includes roast pork, mashed potatoes with gravy, carrots, tossed salad and desert.  The cost is $12.00 per dinner.  Our annual Grange Fair will take place sometime in September.

Our Big Pumpkin Cabaret will be held on Saturday, October 23rd from 10:00am to 4:00pm. It will feature the diverse and joyous musical repertoire of Peter Lange’s band, The Usual Suspects; a selection of pumpkin and apple- based culinary delights, including  pies and pump-

kin squares, fritters, apple sauerkraut hot dogs, cider, cider donuts and candy apples; a theme basket raffle; a diverse Farmers’ Market featuring pumpkins, mums, apples and other produce, maple syrup, jams, jellies, pickles, honey, soaps, lotions, remedies , seasonal items and primitives. We are looking for interested farmers, artisans, artists, and other vendors to take part in this event. The fee for an outside space is $20.00 ($15.00, if payment is made by September 1st). Com- munity organizations are invited to set up informative exhibit booths free of charge. For more information, call John or Penny 860-412- 9811. For the young at heart, there will be a scarecrow and sidewalk drawing contest (haybales provided; bring your own pumpkins and chalk: first prize: 6 free lunches; second prize: 5 free lunches; third prize: 4 free lunches; limit 1 prize per family).
