The 2020 Lecturer's Essay Contest Winner:

MY GRANGE

By Joanne Cipriano  Beacon Valley Grange #103

My Grange hall has always been a busy place with monthly meetings, activity nights, Open Mics, Boy Scout meetings, tag sales etc. The coronavirus has caused it to remain silent for the past six months.

But the Grange is not the building, it’s the members. Ours has been thoughtfully checking on each other daily and lending assistance when needed. Sadly, during this pandemic, we lost two of our officers. We were unable to offer our condolences in person but cards and refreshments were sent.

The animals needed our assistance too. So, we collected and delivered dog food, toys, cages and blankets to Rose Hope Animal Refuge in Waterbury.

Thinking positive and ahead we are collecting items for a tag and rummage sale to be held as soon as restrictions are lifted.

Our Grange is 131 years old. I look forward to helping it celebrate many more birthdays.

It is never too early to enter the 2021 Essay Contest. The title is “A Grange Memory”. It could be the night you joined, an Anniversary or other celebration, or did you actually go to a meeting where there was a goat tied at the front door before degrees. These are only a few suggestions. You may choose any topic that appeals to you. The essay should be 150 words or less and can be mailed or e-mailed to me when you finish.

Take care and stay well!
