Around The Grange
September 2019 News from Ekonk Community Grange No. 89

By Sue Gray

  September 15, 2019 --

Our August meeting started with a moment of silence, praying for the victims of the tragedy in Texas and Ohio. On a happy note, Evelyn Dexter gave a report on the Northeast Youth Conference, which she thoroughly enjoyed at UConn! We found it necessary to replace our old outside oil storage tank with a new one and it now has a shingled roof over it and sits on a cement slab. Despite the incredible heat, we did extremely well on our July Blueberry Supper, having an all-time record of take-outs.

By this reading, the Brooklyn Fair will be history and thanks to Jodi Ann Cameron for once again handling it as Chairperson extraordinaire! We were very fortunate to sell our side by side refrigerator/freezer to a group from Newport, RI and replace it with a brand new, matching commercial refrigerator-- two side by side, they take up most of one kitchen wall, but are most necessary as our crowds continue to swell at our suppers. We are helping Sterling Family Day with a fundraiser in the month of October. We will have a booth at Family Day, giving away apples and fabric bags made especially for and about our Grange. Thanks to Andrea Truppa-Gagas for handling the design and purchase of these great bags, especially handy since “no more plastic.”

On August 15th, Grange families went on a “Full Moon Stroll” on Flat Rock (path in the woods off Hell Hollow Road).

Our Fair got excellent newspaper coverage, we had lots of vendors and the addition of six beautiful quilts added much to our inside entries! We also purchased a popcorn machine and gave away a multitude of bags of delicious popcorn!
