Ekonk Community Grange News for March 2019

By Sue Gray

  MARCH 9, 2019 --

Twenty-four artists enjoyed painting fun at the February Junior Grange meeting!  The Juniors are selling “Lilly Strong” key chains, specially designed in Leukemia orange and glittery.  Honorary Mom, Jai Izzarelli is the designer and they are selling for $5 with total sales going to the Sharpe Family.

We donated 4 corned beef supper tickets to Voluntown Fire Department for their basket raffle/chicken barbecue held to start an “Emergency Need” fund for Voluntown families.  We have 9-10 members participating in the March Northeast Leader’s Conference in Norwich and hope they return with much information and even more enthusiasm!

February 17th was a red letter day at Ekonk.  In the afternoon, we honored 40 year Grangers, Neil and Marlene Cook.  Neil served Sterling in many capacities including First Selectman.  Marlene has also served Sterling on numerous boards.  Both are also active in the First Baptist Church and Sterling Republican Town Committee.  State Senator, Heather Somers and State Rep., Brian Lanoue attended and presented the Cooks’ with a citation from the General Assembly.  Many awards were presented including one from First Selectman, Russell Gray, which proclaimed, henceforth, February 17th as Neil and Marlene Cook Day in Sterling.    We voted our annual $300.00 donation to the CT FFA Career Development Seminar and $100.00 to the Killingly FFA Chapter.

We were absolutely thrilled to have as our special guest, National FFA President, Luke O’Leary from California and the complete CT FFA officer corp, headed by Michael Wetherell, President and RI State FFA Treasurer, Todd Poulos!  A roast beef supper followed by a program, including a welcome to Sterling from First Selectman, Russell Gray; Noel Miller, representing State President, George Russell and numerous other dignitaries from CT and RI.  Luke spoke eloquently and inspired the hall full of delighted listeners.

March 16th will be our first supper: corned beef and cabbage.  Visit Ekonk any 1st Monday or support our Juniors any first Friday.
