Ekonk Community Grange News for October 2016

By Sue Gray

  OCTOBER 15, 2016 --

The Sterling Community Calendars for 2017 are now at the printer and should be available in November. This is the 15th consecutive year that our Grange has supplied Sterling, CT families with this valuable resource. Our Grange booth at Brooklyn Fair was successful, thanks to Jodi Ann Cameron for heading this event. Twenty of our members volunteered at Washington County Fair, Richmond, RI.

We played a very active role in Sterling Family Day in mid-September as well as hosting a “Meet the Candidates Night” at our hall, with the four Democrat and Republican candidates present running for State Senatorial and Representative positions. Many questions of vital interest were asked and answers received. October 8th we will serve an all you can eat roast beef supper, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Our handicapped accessible hall is located at 723 Ekonk Hill Road on the town line of Sterling and Voluntown. November 19th we will serve our annual all you can eat Turkey Supper.

This traditional Thanksgiving meal is a tradition and well worth the ride to enjoy! Verna Cole is already accepting reservations for $10.00 table spaces at our annual Christmas Bazaar -- December 3rd from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  As usual, great food will be available in the Grange kitchen throughout the day. Verna will take table reservations at 860-564- 2388.

Our cancelled/stamped envelopes have become a real hit with philatelists across the United States; the farthest to date was mailed to Seattle, Washington.  Oneco Postmaster, Maurice Bessette, set up the one day recreated Ekonk Post Office, arranged for an Ekonk cancellation stamp from the United States Postal Service and many came and took advantage of this unique opportunity. Maurice further sent flyers about our cancellation stamp to Post Offices and collectors around the United States—a real success story for Ekonk thanks to Maurice!

Maurice will set the Ekonk Post Office up again at our Christmas Bazaar. Folks are encouraged to bring their Christmas cards and get them cancelled from Ekonk Post Office! Questions on any Grange event call 860-564-2131.
