Around The Grange
September News from Simsbury Grange

By Susan Masino

  SEPTEMBER 2016 --

Our Agricultural Fair is September 17 from 10 to 3 P.M. The fair will feature live music from Bill Benson, a well-known local musician and 2013 recipient of the Northwest Connecticut Idol contest. We will have hayrides, children’s games, vendors and… new this year a lemonade garden! We have all the usual contents, and this year we added contests for jellies and jams and for pickled, fermented and canned items. A free welcome bag full of swag is waiting for the first 150 attendees. And anyone who completes an on-site guided scavenger hunt will be rewarded with a free game or hayride. Hope to see you at the Fair!

Our Grange initiated a “Read and Seed” Little Free Library in Hartford. Long story short is I was going to install one and have books and seeds and call it a “Read and Seed” at the Simsbury Grange and give out books and seeds. In parallel my colleague wanted to put a library near the house, and we combined forces to put one next to the community garden I am involved in at Trinity. It is a much more walkable neighborhood.

It has been super successful and I think this idea of a “Read and Seed” might be a project other Granges could mobilize. It is in keeping with the agricultural history of the Grange, some Granges already give out books and dictionaries, and it is a general community service.

We also taped a new program with Dominique Mueller on SCTV (Simsbury Community Television).
