Harmony Grange October News Update

By George Ward

  OCTOBER 5, 2014 --

Our annual Agricultural Fair is now history but the event was very successful. The weather was ideal for everyone, including the outside exhibits. Some of the outside exhibits included a small stationary gasoline engine belt driving an air compressor, two Model “A” Fords, several farm tractors, farm displays, and a display of goat products, including soaps, and two fenced goats. A variety of plants were available for sale.

Inside the Grange Hall we had vendors and an exhibit by the Farm Bureau. Also vegetables, flowers, canned goods, and needlework were on display and judged for awards. A big thank you to our dedicated workers who made the event possible and a special thank you to the kitchen crew including Barbara Standley for preparing the food in the kitchen which included pulled pork and hot dogs and to Ronald and Gail Bunovsky for securing and arranging the outside exhibits.

Our Grange was saddened on August 23 by the death of our oldest member agewise (102) Mary Mazur. The wake was on Friday, August 29 and the funeral on Saturday August 30 Mary was well known for her sense of humor and her commitment to service to others. Her obituary was published in the Connecticut Post. At our August meeting, we celebrated Mary’s 102 year birthday. We had ice cream and cake and Mary blew out the candles on the cake.

In our October meeting, we will decide on a Sunday in October for our 125th anniversary. We will have speakers from the local historical societies and town officials. Our membership is from Monroe and several nearby towns. We will also have entertainment and refreshments.

After our anniversary celebration, we will move our effects to secure more members. With Monroe being a farming community, there are individuals and families interested in keeping farming alive and to keep the Grange in Monroe healthy.

Oct. 10:  Halloween “Fright Night”

NOTE RECEIVED AFTER THE ABOVE WAS WRITTEN:  Our 125th Anniversary Celebration scheduled for October 2014 has been postponed until next Spring.
