Stonington Grange August News Update

Two baking entries from Stonington were provided to State Grange judges on June 7.  Lisa Herzig and youth guest entry Greta (granddaughter of Dick and Dot Wingate).  Greta won for the blue ribbon first prize for the youth entry.  Congratulations to Greta!

The Fifth Degree will be was held in June at North Stonington Grange.  Elevated to the Fifth Degree are Ceildh (Kay-lee) Burdick, Trad Dart and Lisa Herzig, all from Stonington Grange #168.

On June 17 the Perkins scholarship was presented to Stonington High School senior Rochelle Wong who will be studying medicine; there were no agriculture students in this year’s class.

Elections were held at the June 12 meeting; new officers are Trad Dart, Master; Ceildh Burdick, Ceres; Lisa Herzig, Assistant Steward; and Sandra Wright, Flora.  Incumbents retained other offices.  Standing committees will be formed this month.

A “surprise potluck” picnic was held on July 10 at Stonington Grange.  Delicious side dishes were provided by members and accompanied traditional hot dogs and hamburgers grilled by our own real Executive Chef Trad Dart.  A very special reading/Grange love story by a special guest followed our regular meeting.

Connecticut Trivia:  The “Provisions State”- During the Revolutionary War, Connecticut supplied most of the food and cannons for the Continental forces.  “Perhaps the best indication of Connecticut’s pre-eminent position as a supply state is found in Washington’s very frequent appeals to Jonathan Trumbull for help in provisions.”  This quote is found in Albert E.
