Ekonk Community Grange May News Update

By Sue Gray

  MAY 1, 2014 --

The Anniversary is now history and we thank everyone who came.  The Town of Sterling named April 6th, 2014 “Grange Day in Sterling”.  We received citations from the National Grange, the State Grange and two from the Connecticut General Assembly (Reps. Mae Flexer and Steve Mikutel).  The Hermonot Family gifted a beautiful water color painting of our Grange Hall, plus made and donated “125th Anniversary Special” ice cream to compliment the “work of art” cake designed especially for the occasion.  The Juniors added much to the afternoon festivities, sharing their talents and humor.  The program was a blend of history, humor, song and awards to Junior Presidents & Leaders; Subordinate Presidents, Golden Sheaf members and youth under age 23 having belonged 5 or more years (we have 8).  Bill Sebastian created a fantastic movie of our Grange from 1888 to present, complete with background music and his wonderful narrative.  Russell Gray spoke of Ekonk (past); Link Cooper, Ekonk present and Katie Molodich, Ekonk “future”.  Claire Logan, National Ceres, spoke on behalf of National Grange.  The committee, majority new members, included: Link Cooper; Bill Sebastian, Paulette Craig, David and Sue Griffiths and Russell and Sue Gray.  As Russell Gray stated in his closing remark, “Brothers and Sisters, we aim for the stars!”  Special thanks to Patty Cottrell (Richmond, RI) for the unique “Sheaf of Wheat” cookies everyone received.

April 7th, 14 members of Richmond brought us an incredibly entertaining program, featuring numerous stars from the 60’s, 70’s & even 80’s!  Elton John, The Mammas & the Pappas, Sonny & Cher-just to name a few of those who were present!  What a great time we all had!  April also found us busy with 3 suppers; the biennial FFA appreciation supper; Square Dance; Sterling Road Clean up, etc. etc. etc.  We feel like the energizer bunny!  Visit us anytime!
