Anyone for a “Drama Tournament”?

By Edith Schoell, State Historian

MAY 2007 -- At some time in our Grange programs, most of us have taken part in a skit or “black out” for the Lecturer’s program.  Did you know there was a “Drama Tournament”?

Early in the year of 1937 a drama tournament was arranged with Miss Winifred Cheney, Recreation Specialist at Storrs.  A play list was prepared and sent to all the Granges.  The contest was carried on in the various Pomonas under direction of the Pomona Lecturers.  Out of eleven Pomonas, nine participated.

The following Granges won in their Pomonas:  New Canaan #38, Coventry #75, Ekonk #89, Pachaug #96, Litchfield #107, Salisbury #159, Haddam Neck #177, Bethany #188 and Granby #193.

The top two Granges, Litchfield and Haddam Neck presented their entries at the New England Lecturer’s Conference.  These two Granges also received ribbons and a monetary prize.
