Around The Grange
Winchester Grange August Musings

By Todd Gelineau, Winchester Grange President

  AUGUST 3, 2013 --

It doesn’t quite seem like a lot of activities until they are all listed together above!  We usually don’t list events so far into the following month but they are very important and we want to remind everyone well in advance.

Before getting into the future events, we should talk a little about the last month.  On July 20 Gerri Griswold (known throughout the area as the traffic reporter for WZBG in Litchfield) presented her Iceland Affair at the Grange Hall.  The event was a terrific success for her having moved from White Memorial Conservation in Litchfield to Winchester Center.  The hall was filled with foods, music, animals, art, crafts and more from the north Atlantic country that many of us know little about. Quite a few Icelanders traveled to Connecticut to be a part of the day’s activities and to be a part of the Iceland themed concert (sold out) at Infinity Music Hall in Norfolk later in the evening.  The event was such a great success that Gerri plans on holding it again next year at Winchester Grange but most likely in October when the temperatures are less sweltering!  We can’t blame her.

We thank Mountain County Pomona for providing a Campership for a young lady to attend Camp Berger this summer.  She will likely join Winchester Junior Grange later this year and we’re sure she enjoyed her week at Camp.

Looking ahead-- our annual Grange Fair & Flea Market will be held on Saturday, August 10 from 10-4 on the Green and at the Hall.  The Flea Market is filling up quite nicely after declining in numbers in recent years and we are looking forward to a very full green along with the exhibits, judging, food, games and more to be held in the Grange Hall.  Please join us.

Coming in September will be the conferral of the four degrees on two new members and we encourage any Granges with candidates to let us know if they would like to join us for one or both degree meetings with their new members/candidates.  You are always welcome-- we would like to know in advance, if possible, to prepare the necessary materials for the degrees.

And if all of this was not enough, we are planning our participation in the new Winchester Center Day to be held on Saturday, September 14.  Planning meetings involving representatives of the Grange, Winchester Center Cong. Church, the Fire Dept. and the Historical Association have been ongoing this spring and summer with food, contests and a video of Winchester’s 125 years at the Grange Hall, a firefighting foam demonstration at the fire dept., cider pressing at the Chapel and much, much more throughout the day.  It should be a fun event in scenic Winchester Center.  Come visit us!
