APRIL 3, 2013 -- Even though spring is in the air, a group of young teens will be spending Sunday at Wal Mart collecting food for the needy.
The Giving Back Girls want to fill a fire truck with food donations for Southington Community Services from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will hand out lists of the most needed food to customers, then accept the donations and bag them. Southington Fire Co. 1 will donate use of the fire truck.
“They’re very busy,” said Tricia Gibney, mother of twins, Erin and Emily Gibney, the girls who founded the Giving Back Girls two years ago when in sixth grade.
Recently the group, which has grown to include 19 girls in grades 6 to 8, was awarded the Hometown Heroes Award from the United Way of Southington.
Gibney said the Giving Back Girls are scheduled to fill a school bus with donations on June 8, like they did last year.
They also hold bake sales in May, September and November, donating the proceeds to three different local causes.
The next bake sale is scheduled for May 4 at a pasta dinner at the Southington Grange.
Next year Erin and Emily will be entering high school.
They will pass leadership of the group to the next generation and are recruiting girls in fifth and sixth grade.
“We have a great group of girls,” said Gibney. “They want to be involved and give back to the community as much as they can.”
