Norfield Grange news for May

By Ruth L. Hickcox

  MAY 10, 2013 --

First the good news:  at our March meeting we celebrated the phenomenal Sue Sulla’s 99th birthday!  And in honor of St. Patrick host Marie and Kevin Parker cooked up a delicious corned beef and cabbage dinner complete with individual soda breads for every Granger present.

There was a Spring Fling at our Winter Farmers’ Market several days later, with a Potato Recipe contest, judged by the “Head Banging Hostess”, Vanessa David.  Also, in honor of St. Patrick, following a long-held tradition of planting peas, peas were given out to take home to plant or grow on the windowsill.  There was also a Green Teatime Party and an Easter Hat Contest!  On Easter Saturday an Easter Egg Hunt took over the grounds, with more than 100 children of all ages joining in the two hunts.  A treasure was secreted in every plastic egg.  Overseeing it all were the Grange Cow (Elizabeth Eastus of Redding) and the Easter Bunny (Catharine Kimberly of Weston).

But we must end with some very sad news:  Betty Miller, mother of Randy Miller, our Master, passed away after a brief illness on March 10.  She was 97.  She had been a World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving as a 2nd Lieutenant, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Assumption.  In her quiet way, Betty served as Chaplain- a post that fit her well.  It also helped that she had a great sense of humor, and a loyalty to match.  She was our “apron lady”; no one could stitch up an apron faster or more professionally.  Along with our sympathy for the Miller family, we rejoice in a life well lived.

May 14:  Spring Meeting

June 11:  Election of Officers
