Weston’s Norfield Grange Fair features farm fresh fun

By Patricia Gay, Weston Forum (9/7/12)

  SEPTEMBER 7, 2012 --

An old-fashioned agricultural fair packed with food and entertainment will take place rain or shine, this Sunday, Sept. 9, from 10 to 3 at the Norfield Grange on Goodhill Road.

The fair is open to the public and admission is free. On display and for sale will be homemade baked goods, flowers, needlework, and fresh produce. There will also be pony rides, a petting zoo, a snack bar, games for children, face painting, and musical entertainment.

This year, the fair will feature demonstrations from a woodcarver who specializes in carving duck decoys.

Those who grow vegetables, make their own wine, take photos, knit, sew, or bake cookies and cakes, might consider entering one of the many categories that will be judged this year at the Norfield Grange Fair. There will be ribbons awarded as well as a best in show grand prize with an award of $200.12 (to commemorate the year).

Everyone is invited to enter the agricultural competition; entrants do not have to be Weston residents or grange members.

Some of the categories being judged in the competition this year are art (oil, watercolor, drawing, sculpture), photography, crafts, baked goods, canned goods and preserves, fruits and vegetables, flowers, eggs, sewing and needlework, and homemade spirits.

Non-perishable items for the competition may be brought to the grange between 2 and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8. Those items, as well as perishable items and baked goods, may also be delivered on Sunday, Sept. 9, until 10 a.m.

There is no fee for contest submissions and people may enter more than one category.

In addition to agricultural exhibits, there will be a farmers’ market at the fair with vendors selling jellies and jams, fresh produce, olive oil, gluten-free products, and a wide variety of other gourmet foods and household goods.

For more information about the fair and for complete rules and requirements for the agricultural competition, visit norfieldgrange.com or call 203-226-8233.

Fair booklets with descriptions of the contests are available at the Grange Hall, Weston Public Library, Weston Town Hall and Peter’s Spirit Shop.
