In Memoriam
Eureka Grange remembers Eunice Barnes

By New Hartford Plus (10/2/11)

  OCTOBER 3, 2011 --

Eunice (Green) Barnes, passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2011. She was born on September 9, 1913, in Thompsonville, Connecticut. She was the daughter of A. J. Green, Head Designer at Bigelow Sanford Carpet Company, and his wife Ruth (Clapp) Green.

She graduated from New Britain Normal School, now Central Connecticut State, with a permanent teaching certificate, and taught third grade for several years in Hazardville. In 1938, she married Benjamin Winfield Barnes and moved to his farm in New Hartford to take up the roles of farm wife and mother. As her daughter grew more independent, she returned to teaching, first as a substitute, then as the longtime second grade teacher at Bakerville Elementary School. An accomplished artist, she studied oil painting with Barbara Hartmann after her retirement from teaching. But her real medium was water color, and many friends and relatives received her delicate, precise studies of flowers and butterflies as gifts. She was a gold sheaf member of Eureka Grange and a long-time member of Nepaug Bible Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol; her grandchildren, Kathryn Fidler and her partner Ron Barron, and Benjamin Fidler, who will take over the farm; and several generations of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her two brothers, J. Jackson and Dexter Green; and her beloved husband. She will be buried beside her husband with a private ceremony.

Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele Road, New Hartford has care of the arrangements. Donations in her memory may be made to Nepaug Bible Church, Foothills VNA, or Valerie Manor Health Care Center. Visit an online guestbook at Montano-shea.com.
