Winchester Grange Musings for December

By Todd Gelineau, Winchester Grange President

  DECEMBER 5, 2011 --

It’s been anything but a quiet month at Winchester Grange.  On Nov. 15 our newly appointed fundraising/hall rental committee met at the hall to work out plans for fundraisers and hall rentals.  Following the meeting, our member and Deputy Fire Chief Peter Marchand checked on the furnace (as he does almost daily) to make sure everything was okay.  Unfortunately this time everything was not okay and after inspection by a technician it was declared deceased as it had sprung a very big leak in the combustion chamber.

This furnace was original to the hall in 1952 and was built by Sherwood Berger (yes, of the Camp Berger family).  It served the Grange well for nearly 60 years and now is being replaced.  It, of course, was coated with the remarkable fire retardant (of the time) asbestos, creating an additional project and expense before the new furnace can be installed.  Between getting quotes, arranging for abatement and scheduling installation, it’s been quite stressful time!

Our second meeting in November was moved to the new Firehouse in the back of the building and we hope repairs will be complete for our first meeting in December. If not, we will take the firemen up on their generous offer to host our meetings until things are “back to normal.”  We hope it’s all resolved before freezing weather sets in permanently for the season!

Dec. 13:  Christmas, Ref. Shirley Lemieux

Dec. 27:  Meeting Omitted for the Holidays

Jan. 10:  A New Year, 6:00 P.M. Potluck Supper
