Bridgewater Grange Member receives scholarship

By Jack Coraggio, Litchfield County Times (7/14/11)

  JULY 23, 2011 --

No good deed goes unrewarded—at least not for a quartet of college students from Bridgewater who are active in the local community.

The Persbacker Family Scholarship Fund recently awarded to four Bridgewater natives a $3,000-per-year scholarship that extends over four years, a gift that is based upon their service to the small town community from which they hail.

Jeff Kaprielian, who has worked diligently on various water cleanup and other environmental efforts, will enter his senior year at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain this fall.

Sarah Mae Case, a loyal volunteer with the Bridgewater Grange #153, will be a junior at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

Stacy Sullivan, who works yearly with the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department to assist with Bridgewater Country Fair setup, will enter her sophomore year at Castleton State College in Vermont.

And Cody Luongo, a participant in youth soccer and a first-year recipient, will begin his freshman year at Centenary College in New Jersey.

None of those efforts define the entire scope of their volunteer services.

“We look for consistent, not episodic, service,” Ned Bandler, a fund representative, told The Litchfield County Times. “We hope it will reach kids not just at the college level; we hope kids will see things bigger than self and self-self-satisfaction.”

Former Bridgewater resident Victor L. Persbacker, who died last year, established the $300,000 scholarship fund through the Waterbury-based Con n ecticut Community Found ation in 2003 to financially help students who have a strong record of community service.

Applications for the 2012 Persbacker Family Scholarship Fund will be available in January at the Shepaug Valley High School Guidance Department, and online at www.conncf.org.
