CT State Grange to host Wolcott Grange Open House June 18

By Terri Fassio, Public Relations Co-Director

  JUNE 14, 2011 --

On Saturday, June 18th, members of the Wolcott community are invited to attend a special Open House at Wolcott Grange Hall to learn about Wolcott Grange and the significant impact it can have in the community.

The Open House begins at 2:00 PM.  Wolcott Grange Hall is located at 313 Bound Line Road.

Connecticut State Grange President Jody Cameron and Grange representatives from across the area will be speaking on the benefits of the Grange to the Wolcott community including fellowship, community service, contests, activities, events, agricultural and legislative initiatives, children and young adult programs and more.

Wolcott Grange Hall was built in the 1920s as part of the Wolcott Green Historic District.  Through the years the group has presented floats in local parades, hosted pancake breakfasts and was well-known for their delicious Dairy Dinners.  The Grange was formed March 17, 1909, with 24 charter members.  The organization grew quickly, to at one time having more than 200 members.

Community service projects have been the backbone of Wolcott Grange, with projects such as donating to the food pantry, presenting scholarships, placing displays and exhibits at local fairs, donating baby hats to hospitals and more.  But despite all of the Grange's work, members were growing older and tiring.

Members knew that an infusion of energy was needed to bring Wolcott Grange back to its community service roots, and so as Wolcott Grange members celebrate its 102nd anniversary, the group has begun a new growth program, beginning with the Open House on June 18th.

"Wolcott Grange is the perfect example of a Grange changing with the times and staying relevant," said Todd Gelineau, a member of the Connecticut State Grange Growth Team. "Now they need to grow their membership so that they can have an even greater and more significant impact in the community they service."
