| MAY 8, 2011 -- Spring is finally here, and there is no better way to celebrate than by growing your own fresh vegetables. Getting off on the right foot is important for having a successful and satisfying harvest.
On Thursday, May 19 at 6:30 PM, Winchester Grange will sponsor a presentation on Vegetable Gardening by Master Gardener and Winchester Grange member Sherri LeBlanc at the Beardsley and Memorial Library.
In addition to vegetable gardening, LeBlanc will also discuss the Connecticut State Grange 2011 Agriculture Program. The program includes growing butternut squash as part of the "Feed the Hungry" project, which donates surplus squash to local area food banks. Free butternut squash seeds will be distributed to everyone in attendance.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Beardsley and Memorial Library is located at 40 Munro Place, Winsted.
Winchester Grange No. 74 was organized on January 2, 1888 with 31 charter members. Today, Winchester is the largest Grange in the state of Connecticut boasting nearly 300 members. Winchester Grange plays an important role in the community, and is best known for the yearly Agricultural Fair and Flea Market each August, Strawberry Festival every year on Father's Day, holiday bazaar, tag sales, concerts, programs and more.
