Litchfield Farmland Talk to be held on May 5

Henry N. Talmage is the featured speaker for the May 5 meeting at The Women’s Forum to be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Litchfield Community Center. He will speak on the topic “Conservation options for Connecticut Farmland.”

Henry Talmage is the new executive director of Connecticut Farm Bureau Association, the voice of Connecticut Agriculture. CFBA is a non-profit, grass-roots membership organization dedicated to farming and future of Connecticut agriculture by focusing on the economic viability, land use, labor, taxation, and the protection of farmland.

Prior to his current position at the Connecticut Farm Bureau, he served as executive director of the Connecticut Farmland Trust for five years. Established in 2002, the Connecticut Farmland Trust is the only private statewide conservation organization dedicated to protecting Connecticut’s working farmland.

He is a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in agricultural economics. He is a native of Long Island, N.Y., and has extensive experience in farming, agribusiness and real estate. Before coming to Connecticut from Long Island, he was director of operations for Talmage Farm, a family owned wholesale greenhouse and nursery business with a retail farm and garden store. He has served as president of the Long Island Farm Bureau and has served on the Advisory Council of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.

Lectures of The Women’s Forum are open to the public and are generally held on the first Thursday of the month, October though May, at The Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Road, Litchfield. Tickets for guests are $5. A tea will follow the lecture.

The Women’s Forum of Litchfield, is an organization whose purpose is to provide programs that reflect “a thoughtful exchange on subjects of general interest.” Founded in 1914, the organization has had an impressive list of speakers throughout its history including Eleanor Roosevelt.
