CT Farmer Honored for Sustainability, Conservation Efforts

By Dawn Pindell, Windham County FSA, USDA Blog (4/6/11)

  APRIL 20, 2011 --

A Windham County, Conn., resident was recognized as an outstanding farmer during Ag Week for utilizing environmentally conscious technology and progressive agriculture sustainability.

Matthew Peckham, who operates a dairy farm with 140 Holstein and Jersey cows, was honored during a ceremony at the Connecticut State Capitol. The Windham County Farm Service Agency nominated him for his work with farm programs and dedication to conservation practices.

Peckham began his farm career as a boy working with his grandfather. After college he was ready to use his skills in management, budgeting and herd production to take over the family farm. A sixth-generation farmer, Peckham is known in the community for hosting the Old Iron Tractor Club — an event that allows the residents to watch antique tractor enthusiasts plow the field for spring planting.

Matthew and his wife Christine are raising four children and strive to keep the farm productive in order to transition it to the seventh generation.
