National Grange President to visit Connecticut April 9

By Terri Fassio

  APRIL 2, 2010 --

As part of Connecticut's Grange Month celebrations, National Grange President Edward L. Luttrell will be making a visit to the state on Friday, April 9, as he tours the Northeast region. Hemlock Grange #182 will be hosting the President's visit at their Grange Hall located at 17 Sage Hollow Road (Corner of Rt. 17 and 17A), Portland, CT. The evening will begin at 6:30 PM with a Press Conference with the media, followed by the meeting at 7:30 PM. The meeting is open to all who wish to attend; Grange membership is not required.

Luttrell will discuss issues critical to the Grange, including the importance of food safety, the recent Connecticut legislation regarding locally grown and produced foods, as well as Grange growth, teamwork and communications. Connecticut State Grange President Robert Sendewicz will oversee the evening.

Luttrell of Sandy, Oregon was elected in November 2009 to his second two-year term as National Grange President. He is a past president of the Oregon State Grange and has served on the boards of the Oregon Lands Coalition, Grange Mutual Insurance Company, and Timberland States Insurance Company.

April has been declared "Grange Month" by the National Grange, and is an opportunity to showcase the Grange organization - its purpose, programs and activities - in communities throughout the United States.

The theme for this year's Grange Month is "Now Is The Time" and is reflective of the efforts and accomplishments of Granges across the Nation. Opportunities for growth, service and leadership surround each Grange and "Now is the Time" to utilize these opportunities. "Now is the Time" Granges will be reaching out to their communities and making a commitment to better their communities through service projects. "Now is the Time" Grange members can mentor the youth in their communities and build leaders for tomorrow.

Founded in 1867 to help both southern and northern farmers recover from the ravages of the Civil War, the National Grange has evolved to incorporate the interests of non-farm families and communities. Health care, education and communications access are just a few of the Grange's current areas of involvement. The organization has approximately 240,000 members in nearly 3000 local and state chapters across forty states, with over 60 local Grange chapters in Connecticut. Local Granges are committed to bettering their communities through service projects and family orientated activities.
