Grangers remember Helen Beard

Helen Irene (Pond) Beard, 80, of 34 Cobble Rd. died Jan 8, 2007, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of John William Beard.

Mrs. Beard was born in Sharon, the daughter of Geraldine (Bailey) Pond Marcou of Culpepper, Va., and the late Loyal S. Pond. She was one of 17 children in her family.

A skilled seamstress, she also worked at Becton Dickinson in North Canaan and Precision Molding in Lakeville. She attended Housatonic Valley Regional High School and was a member of St. John's Church in Salisbury.

Mrs. Beard was a past president of the Lakeville Hose Company's Auxiliary and held the same post at the Lakeville VFW. She was a past district county president of the VFW and also served as president of the Millerton VFW Unit. She was a member of both the Laurel Grange in East Canaan and the Winchester Grange in Winchester.

She enjoyed sewing. She and her daughter, Dolly, volunteered at both Geer and Noble Horizons.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Beard is survived by her daughter, Patricia L. "Dolly" Beard of Salisbury, with whom she lived; her sisters Phyllis Kustol, Lois Colby, Bonnie Bell Hill, all of New Milford, and Rolanda Williams of Culpepper; her brothers Loyal Pond of New Milford, Olington Pond of Oakville, Conn., Welington Pond of Macersburg, Pa., Stuart Pond of New Milford and Ronald Marcou of Virginia.

She was predeceased by her sisters Birdella Pond, Beatrice White, Cherry Starr, Marilyn Pond and Doris Silvernale; and her brothers Warren Pond and Dean Woodard.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. in St. John's Church in Salisbury. Burial will be at a later date.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Salisbury Band, Lakeville Hose Company, St. John's Church or the NW Hills Visiting Nurses Association.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in Canaan.
