Civil War event comes to Oxford Grange March 20

By Dorothy A. DeBisschop (Valley Independent 3/12/10)

  MARCH 14, 2010 --

A Civil War program, featuring Sharon Smith, author of "Connecticut's Civil War, A Guide for Travelers," will be held at 2:00 p.m. March 20, at Oxford Grange Hall. The event is presented by the Oxford Historical Society.

Smith will highlight the role of abolitionists in Connecticut, before and during the war.

Hers book details key sites of the abolition movement, the factories and mills that armed and clothed the Union army, and the homes and monuments of heroes, mostly Union but some Confederate, with connections to the state.

Smith's book is the first ever to offer descriptions and directions to hundreds of sites, monuments, and museums connected to Connecticut's participation in the Civil War.

In addition to the talk, the event will feature on exhibit the roster of Oxford's Civil War soldiers, photos of civil war veteran's tombstones in Oxford cemeteries, and an exhibit on the Washband Tavern, Oxford's stop on the Underground Railroad.

Period refreshments will be provided by Oxford Historical Society members, under the leadership of Marilyn Stebar. They will use Civil-War era recipes including favorite recipes of Civil War heroes. In addition to samples of the hard tack that formed the basis of the Civil War soldier's daily rations, attendees will also enjoy a variety of cakes and cookies.

Jane Hulbert will make a Civil War era Orange cake recipe. Marcia Wrogg will make an Abraham Lincoln family recipe for pound cake and Loretta Rowland will prepare ginger cakes. Old fashioned molasses cookies will be baked by Nancy Farnum. Printed copies of the recipes will be available to attendees.

The program is open to the public. Admission is $5.00, with children 12 and under admitted free.
