  MAY 2, 2008 --

The Sterling Ekonk Community Grange presented 17 membership awards during a roast pork luncheon April 20. The awards represented 935 combined years of community service between the recipients.

The Sterling Ekonk Community Grange presents membership awards twice a year to any members who have been involved with the grange for a minimum of 25 years.

Member Hazel Opperman received her 75-year award at the event. According to Grange secretary Sue Gray, when Opperman received her 50-year membership award she said she would never live to get her 75-year award. Grange program director Russell Gray has only given out a handful of the 75-year awards because a member can only join the Grange when they become 14 years old. Opperman joined when she was 21-years-old , making her an active Grange member at age 96.

The Sterling Ekonk Community Grange presented awards to Marion Emmons, Alton Exley, Marie Exley, Jill Exley-Renaud , Jane Exley-Eaton , Doris Murray, Doris Desjardins, Charles Gray, George Turner, Fred Miller, Dorothy Miller, David Hunt and Past Master Albert Frink.

One of the Grange's projects is helping with Sterling Family Day, said Gray. "Community service is our focus," she said.

The Grange has approximately 150 members and an active Junior Grange, too.
