| MAY 2, 2011 -- If you look at page 14 in The Grange Songbook you will see a song entitled “It’s a Good Thing to be a Granger”. The song mentions friendly neighbors. Grangers all across the state are friendly and welcome strangers to their halls. We can renew old friendships and make new ones. But, we have to get out and go visit. Don’t become a coach potato. Just today I brought a picture to someone whose family I have known for more years than I want to admit and also got a hug from someone I only met two months ago. She is moving to another part of the state and was delighted that I was willing to help her get in touch with Grangers near her new home. I know she will be welcomed with open arms at her new home Grange.
The song also mentions the good times we will have and how they will make your heart glad. Yes, there are good times to be had for all, but you have to help too. Suggest a program for your Lecturer. Offer to do a number or even a whole program for her. I heard it said this week that people don’t want to come out just for a reading or song or poem. I agree. We need better programs. We need programs that make people want to come to Grange. Let’s all join together and make this a reality.
It is a good time to be a Granger. There are activities for one and all. Statewide events are being planned. There are Good Grange Dinners being held all over the state. Read the Granger. Check your Pomona handbook. By doing this not only will you get a good home-cooked meal at a reasonable price, but, you will be helping the other Grange financially. And, I’m willing to bet you will make some new friends while you are there.
The last thing I want is for you to think I have climbed up on a bandstand to lecture. What I want is to see the Grange carry on and have a gain in membership. To do this we have to work together.
